DIY Colorful Kitchen Gift Basket

DSC_0006While I am a huge fan of homemade gifts, as demonstrated by our sarcastic coffee mugs, or our homemade glass cutting boards, I’ve also learned that presentation can turn something nice into something extraordinary. That’s why I’ve become a huge fan of incorporating a taste of something homemade into a gift basket themed to the recipient.

Admittedly, some of that is also driven by our love of supporting the community and our need to get rid of the products we often create for this blog. Channeling those efforts into gift baskets, we can donate to local silent or Chinese auction fundraisers for organizations we support; a great way for us to test out our ideas and benefit a great cause at the same time.

This particular basket was put together to make use of the DIY glass cutting boards we had created for a post a few weeks back. We were looking for a basket to donate to the Run for Alex, a wonderful event that happens in our hometown each year to benefit the From Alex With Love Foundation. The foundation was started by the family of a local track star who was struck by a car and killed while walking home from school one afternoon. A 2-mile and 5-mile race are held each year to raise funds that are distributed through scholarships and donations to causes the family believes honor the memory of their daughter.

Along with sponsoring the event, we had volunteered to put together a basket for their auction table. Using our handcrafted glass cutting boards as the centerpiece, we hit the stores looking for items that would make it both colorful and attractive to people deciding where to drop their tickets.

DSC_0020We picked up the beautiful gray basket at Gabe’s for just $4 and snagged the colorful kitchen hand tools one aisle over for just a few dollars more. ($2 for the set of three tiny silicone spatulas, $2 for the two pack of colorful whisks and $1.50 for the full-size spatula.) Then we stopped by Ollie’s, where we found high-quality muffin tins on clearance for just $3 each. We snagged two of them before spotting cookbooks on the next display table, picking up a wonderful cupcake themed one for $2.50. A trip next door to Dollar Tree turned up these colorful kitchen towels and washcloths that matched our silicone hand tools perfectly. Eight dollars later, we headed to Giant Eagle where we picked up two baking mixes on sale for $1 each.

If you’re keeping tabs, that’s $28 in supplies plus our two glass trivets, also from Dollar Tree, bringing our out of pocket expenses to $30. Not bad for a gorgeous, themed basket and a great example of what you can do with a little bargain shopping and an eye for design. You can pick up the SVG files for the “I licked it, it’s mine now” design and the “How do I like my eggs? Umm…in a cupcake” design in our store.

DIY Mean Girls Tumbler Pack

DSC_0158Some movies are more quotable than others; Tommy Boy, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Princess Bride. For those of us in our twenties and thirties, especially females, Mean Girls also makes that list. It’s a testament to the comedic brilliance of Tina Fey that it’s almost impossible to get through more than a few minutes of the film without hearing a quote-worthy line.

You might remember the post about Ariel and I introducing Johnna to the movie back when we posted about our homemade toaster strudel recipe. That entire night came about because Ariel and I were throwing Mean Girls quotes back and forth, and Johnna had no idea what we were saying.

The one thing we decided was missing from our party was Mean Girls themed cocktails and Mean Girls themed wine glasses or cups. We’re still working on some themed cocktails, but when I spotted some colorful tumblers with fruit infusion cores during my last run to the Dollar Tree, I knew we needed to spice them up with some Mean Girl’s Quotes.

The challenge was picking our favorites. After all, there are dozens from which to choose.

Like this one:

Or this one…

Or this one…

Sex talk

Or the quote that started it all here in our offices…

Narrowing them down wasn’t easy.

Ultimately, Ariel and I came up with four that we loved.

“She Doesn’t Even Go Here!”

“On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink”

“You Go, Glen Coco”

And of course, “Boo, You Whore”

They’re perfect for sipping drinks out by the pool while we brainstorm ideas for upcoming posts, and they are clearly perfect for Mean Girl viewing nights. Paired up with some Toaster Strudel, a Calculator, a plastic Tiara, a bottle of Virgin Daiquiri Mix and a pink article of clothing, this would also make a great themed gift basket for the Mean Girl’s fan in your life.
